To be successful, a brand must be memorable. It needs to be consistent and instantly recognisable, while also having the ability to move with the times and stay fresh. This balance allows brands to stay relevant and create the right buzz among consumers.
YouGov recently announced its annual BrandIndex ‘Buzz’ rankings, revealing the top brands that had everyone talking in 2019. Buzz scores are calculated by asking members of the public daily if they’ve heard anything positive or negative about a brand in the past fortnight - subtracting the percentage of negative responses from the percentage of positive responses. YouGov’s BrandIndex Buzz Rankings are the average of these scores between January 1st and December 31st, 2019.
In 2019, Netflix ended Aldi’s six-year run as the UK’s favourite brand, taking the top spot with a score of 21.4 – an increase of five points compared to 2018. Netflix entered rankings in 2016 and the streaming platform has skyrocketed to the top in an incredibly short time. Netflix’s commitment to producing original shows earned the brand multiple accolades in 2019, including nominations for the Oscars and Golden Globes. Truly a brand to be reckoned with.
Elsewhere, the runaway success of its vegan sausage roll helped Greggs make its first entry into the top 10 with a score of 11. The only other new entry was Spotify on 10.4. The Greggs’ vegan sausage roll helped drive a bumper rise in profit for the brand, and is a great example of a well-known brand making a change to meet a consumer need, allowing it to remain modern, valued and relevant in the marketplace.
